The Cardinals along with Alicia went over some Spanish names for  clothing that we wear. We talked with Alicia about how we are all the same and different, igual y diferenteWe talked about how we all look different but we all feel sad, cry, play, eat, have eyes, ears and hair, which celebrates the many ways we are all amazing and that what matters most is to be yourself. Alicia read us the book What We Wear -Dressing Up Around the World by Maya AjmeraThe book was about the different types of clothing children around the world wear. The one thing that's the same is that we all wear clothes!! Today it was Julian's turn to squeeze La Vaca!

Today we had a class discussion about whether each friend wanted to create their own house or if we should build a big house that the Cardinals could fit in. We voted and the result is a big house.  Friends shared thoughts as to what our house might look like - 3 heart windows, 5 rectangles doors, a flat and triangle roof! Stay Tuned! We then read the book, If I Built a House by Chris Van Dusen. The Cardinals had much to say about this book and what they would want to create!

Wren - Race Track Room - to race in with my gator.

Grant - Play - animals

Ellery - A Kitchen - so it make food and do the dishes.

Isa - Build a slide - A Sonic spin and dash thing and a robot to make my food.

Lake - I want a flying house and a slide too. - I go in it.

Julian - A kitchen - so my mommy don't have to cook all day. I would ask it to make all the food.

Colby - A hot wheels room -  cause I play.

Whelan - A bug room - I want swimming bugs. So I would need water.

Masai - A big house - I play my baby sister.

Willow - All the rooms in the house of that book - I just like them.

Zoey - A Kitchen - where all my friends can help cook.

Renata - A Unicorn house - with a slide.

Lydia - All the rooms - especially cause you can fly in the flying room.

Annie - I want a slide room - cause it like a roller coaster.

Tuesday

As usual, the Cardinals enthusiastically went to Library class with Michelle.  She read friends an oldie but a goodie:  "Caps For Sale" They loved it!  The Cardinals had all kinds of questions about why the man had so many caps, why he wanted to sell them and why did the monkeys take them?  The Cardinals quickly connected that whatever the man did, the monkeys did back - so that is how he got them all back.

The Cardinals then picked out their own books.  We can't wait to read them together!

Tuesday was so cold, but we dressed and made the trek over to the gym to see Josh for Gym class. Josh showed friends the items they were going to play with today - the common theme was that everything was a Circle!  They played with hula hoops - even turning them into spinning tops - frisbees, and little rings.  The highlight of class was when Josh built castles out of the big hula hoops.  Friends sat in the middle of the castles together.  It was a wonderful class - and a much needed release of some energy:)

                            Friends playing in big boxes!!

Wednesday

The Cardinals began the day by taking turns working on an art project with Eileen and a journal entry title, "How do you make vegetable soup?" with Beverly. While other friends dance ballet to music, listen to stories read aloud and build in the block area.

The project with Eileen was about color and emotions.  The Cardinals made circles on their paper in all different colors.  They experimented with making their colors darker by adding more paint or making them lighter by adding more water.  They enjoyed making new colors on their paper too.  When the paint dries, the Cardinals are going to draw faces on their circles to depict different emotions.  The project is loosely based on the book, "Mixed."  Stay Tuned!

In Art class with Johanna, we focused on Color - mainly the primary colors of red, yellow and blue.  Johanna read an interactive book called, Push Me by Herve Tullet.  The Cardinals took turns pushing a color in the book and then turning the page to see what happened to what they pushed!  They loved it:). Then they went to the tables to use tempera paint sticks in the primary colors to make circles all over the page - and to watch the magic of mixing the colors together!

Thursday

Our Art work with Eileen continued today with the Cardinals adding faces to the painted circles they created yesterday!  They had so much fun adding funny eyes, eyebrows, a nose, hair and a mouth.  There were some sheets to copy images from, but many clever Cardinals had their own ideas!  The pride on their faces and the sounds of giggling were priceless:)

Julian led us into music class and we warmed up by dancing with scarves and shaker eggs to the song Philadelphia Chickens by the Bacon Brothers. Following by warming up our singing voice by doing some Hooty voices. The Cardinals then sang our hello song Jambo along with Keisha as she played her guitar. We sang and did the movement for Five Little Cows and Loo by Loo. Keisha then taught us a new song called Shiver. Friends used shaker eggs as Keisha played the guitar. After our goodbye song, we headed back to our classroom. Ask your Cardinals to sing you our goodbye song?

Friday

Early this morning we had an assembly in the auditorium. Back in the classroom, we had morning meeting followed by snack time. The entire AFS community took part in a service project today. The Cardinals, Catbirds and Hummingbirds classes along with their second grade buddies helped to do service work by baking cookies which will be decorated on Martin Luther King Day here at school on Monday 1/20/25. These cookies will be given to people in shelters to hopefully bring a smile to their face and for them to feel a sense that others care about them.  We hope to see you and your family this coming Monday, 1/20/25 at AFS for Martin Luther King day service of work! Ask your Cardinal why we did not eat any of the cookies?

There are many ways for you and your Cardinal to also take part in service work on Martin Luther King Day here at AFS!  See below

                  Have a wonderful Weekend !!
