After greetings, going over the Calendar and Hundred Chart in Spanish, the Cardinals took part in a shape hunt around the inside of lower school. Alicia gave out small magnifying glasses that friends will bring home. Alicia then asked each Cardinal to choose a piece of paper with the shape they want to look for. Soon the Cardinals were off on their adventure. Friends cheered as they found their shape and helped others along the way.  Today it was Renata's turn to squeeze la vaca! Ask your Cardinal what shape they choose?

The Cardinals working on their December Self-Portrait!

Tuesday

Friends working on a journal entry titled, "What did you do over break?"

Michelle read the book, I Want That Nut by Madeline Valentine  The book was about a few animals that saw a nut and decided that Chipmunk should get the nut but deep down they all wanted it. Throughout the book all the animals got to spend time with the nut but in sneaky ways. In the end they all decide to be kind to each other and share the nut together! The Cardinals had much to say about this book such as they should each try finding a nut, they need be kind, they mad each other, the mouse was in scary costume!

Gym class began with Josh meeting us in the hallway and the Cardinals running to him. Today friends worked on eye-hand coordination.

Wednesday

The Cardinals finishing up their December self portraits and journal work!

The first Wednesday of each month, the Cardinals have meeting for worship in our classroom. Today we told the Cardinals how we were going to spend our meeting for worship time. We explained the activity we were going to do, which entailed two friends at a time getting two wooden blocks and placing them anywhere they chose on the large piece of black paper in the center of our circle. Before we began we told the class two important rules to follow, "You can not move anyone's blocks and we need to do our activity in silence." Wow, our Cardinals did a wonderful job!

We then asked friends to take a closer look at our creation and say what they think it looks like. Here is what friends had to say:

Ellery - New York city

Colby - A Castle

Lake - A Tower

Wren - A boat with everything people would need

Zoey - A Castle

Whelan - A big playground

Masai - The Zoo

Lydia - A neighborhood

Renata - Like my baby brother

Grant - Playground

Annie - Driving in traffic

Julian - My house

Willow - A city

After snack time and morning meeting, we had a class discussion in which each Cardinal shared what they wanted to learn more about. We will explore these great ideas soon. Stay Tuned!

Whelan - Frogs

Colby -  Playing outside

Lake -  Share things

Wren - Farming

Masai - Food/cooking

Lydia - Shooting stars

Ellery - Space

Zoey -  Cooking

Grant - Cooking

Renata - Fish

Annie - Butterflies

Willow - Space

Julian -  Space

The Cardinals were very excited today because they remembered that Johanna told them that they were going to paint their fossils in Art Class. After putting on their smocks - some with a little help and some very independently- the Cardinals went to the table to paint. Johanna demonstrated how they could use small, slow strokes in order to get in all the cracks and crevices of their creations. Talk about concentration! The class fell practically silent! They really enjoyed what they were doing. Their pieces will be fired - no doubt they will be fantastic! Ask your Cardinal what colors they chose for their fossil.

Thursday

The Cardinals helped to make a new batch of playdough. Friends voted between the colors green and blue, 6 friends voted for blue, while 7 friends voted for green playdough and so our new batch of playdough is green. The color blue will be one of the choices for our next new batch of playdough.

Voting on our play dough color!

As we were eating snack, friends noticed snow flurries outside! The Cardinals made a big cheer and moved quickly to the windows. We paused eating snack, put on our jackets, hats and gloves and went outside!  Friends run around and even tried to catch a flake or two on their tongues and gloves!!

Friday

                           Continuing to create our snowpeople!

It's getting colder outside so the Cardinals built their own indoor snowperson using the letters in their name!  What a fun process! So many approaches to the project - counting the letters in Friend's names, seeing who had the most letters, seeing who has the least amount of letters, tracing circles, cutting circles, writing or tracing the letters in their name, gluing the letters in order, adding eyes, a nose, a scarf and a carrot nose and finally admiring their own and their friend's work!  You can see the final masterpieces hanging on the wall by the back door.  Ask your Cardinal how many letters are in their name.

                                    Enjoy the weekend!!
