Welcome

Weekend News
Tuesday
What is weekend news? It's a dictation given by each Cardinal weekly on Mondays after returning to school from the weekend. It's another way for young children to strengthen language skills, develop longer sentence structure, gain skills in recalling and retelling information, understand sequence of events and to further develop memory skills.
As the weeks and months go by you will see your Cardinal gaining skills in all of the above areas. Some weeks you will notice that your Cardinal had a lot to say, while other weeks not so much or the information given may be from your Cardinal's imagination and this is okay. The purpose of the weekend news is to help foster language development. We write the Cardinals Weekend News verbatim as they speak.

The Cardinals returned their library books before listening to the book, The Cow who Clucked by Denise Fleming. The book was very interactive and the Cardinals were engaged, it was about a cow who lost her moo. The cow walked around the farm talking to the other animals trying to find who had her moo! Friends then picked and checked out a book to bring back to our classroom! Ask your Cardinal why did you choose your book?
Wednesday
In Meeting for Worship with the other EC classes. Carol guided us in meditation, in which we began by taking deep breaths followed by quiet breaths. She then continued by asking us to imagine in our heads without words, holding our favorite color balloon. We then imagine blowing our balloons up. After that, we thought of a person, we wanted to give our balloons too. We finished up by sending our balloons along with some love to our person. This meditation was done in silence with only Carol guiding us in a quiet voice. Friends did a fantastic job of creating their thoughts without words!! The Hummingbirds class sang Three little Birds by Bob Marley this week to the Catbirds and Cardinals classes! We all sang This Little Light of Mine together!!
We took a look at the two choices we have to create a home for our soon to arrive class pet fish. The choices were a very large vase or a small tank? The Cardinals voted as a class. A teacher said, "If you vote for the small tank, stand on the red rug." She then continued, "If you want the large vase, stand in the block area." We then counted the number of friends in each area, zero friends chose the large vase, while 12 friends chose the small tank. And so our class pet's home will be the small tank! We then clean, fill our tank with water and add special treatment so the water can become the temperature of our classroom! Stay Tuned for what comes next!
In Art Class with Johanna today, the Cardinals were introduced to Warm (red, orange, yellow) and Cool (purple, blue, and green) Colors. They were given a piece of clay and had to match it to the posters that were on the ground. They did a great job naming and matching the colors. They then went to the tables to manipulate some clay. They used the muscles in their hands to smooth, cut, roll, make impressions, and build with their clay. There certainly are some very creative Cardinals! Johanna told the class that this week was "practice" for what they are going to do next week. They gave their clay back at the end of class this week - but next week's clay will dry out and become hard and that they can keep that creation! The Cardinals loved that idea!
Thursday
The Cardinals working on their November self-portraits!
Lake led us into music class, we danced to Dinosaur Stomp and acted out the actions to the song! After a moment of quiet and stillness. The Cardinals sang our hello song Jambo as Keisha played her guitar! Friends independently sang the Bunny poem to Keisha and teachers. Yay Cardinals!! Ask your Cardinal to sing the song for you? We continued class by practicing our Hey Little Ant song and acting out some actions for the song. Keisha gave out bells and we sang while acting out motions such as jump, tip toe, gallop away and matching. What a fun, busy time we had in music class!!
Friday
Early this morning the entire lower school gathered in the auditorium for an assembly. We all took part in our Say Hello song led by the 4th graders. We then had the pleasure of sitting back and listening to the Colgate University acapella group sing and perform for us. One of our AFS alumni was in the group!! We enjoyed the many musical notes and beautiful singing!
Spanish class today began with friends working on the Calendar and Hundreds Charts in Spanish. We then went over colors in Spanish and then played a game of color bingo. Friends work in pairs of 2 and take turns playing the chip on the correct color. Nice work Cardinals! Today it was Wren's to squeeze la vaca!
The Cardinals continued playing board games in our classroom after Morning meeting and snack time! We played Candy Land, Snail Pace Race and a Fishing memory game. Friends played in groups of four or five. Nice work Cardinals!
Have a great weekend!
