Practice Fire Drill, Sensory Activities, Taking Care of plants, Rainy Days Fun and More...

Monday

The Cardinals went over the numbers on the Calendar and Hundred Chart in Spanish class with Alicia. Followed by playing the swatter game in which each friend got a chance to practice figuring out numbers as Alicia called them out in Spanish!! This work of consistent repetition is essential in young children's learning! We finished up class by Alicia calling out a number and friends needed to figure out the number and then make that number of steps around the room. Today it was Grant's turn to squeeze la vaca!

                                   Outdoor large motor fun!

Tuesday

Early this morning our entire AFS community partake in a practice fire drill. Before our fire drill, we explained to our Cardinals what would happen. We explained that there was No fire and that we all needed to practice at school and at home what to do if there was a real fire. First, we talked about the loud noise and what friends could do such as covering their ears if the fire alarm was too loud, being quiet, walking to the back door, not going to play on the playground and to stay with our group over in the grassy area outside. Our Cardinals did an incredible job once the fire alarm did go off!  No, Cardinal cried and did a fantastic job following our directions! Yay, amazing Cardinals!!

Once back inside our classroom, we asked each Cardinal, "What did you think of our fire drill?" Here is what our friends had to say:

Willow - If there was a real fire it would take them a long time to put it out.

Masai - It wasn't fire, I little sad.

Whelan - I was happy cause I like that noise.

Lake - Fire was small not really big. I didn't like noise.

Ellery - I wasn't scared at all cause we did it last time.

Annie - I thought it was going be smoke but it wasn't. I was a little nervous.

Julian - It wasn't scary and I thought the fire truck was coming but there was no fire. We did fire drill last time in Cardinal class.

Zoey -  I did fire drill before. I wasn't scared at all.

Lydia - We are just quiet at fire drill and we go outside.

Grant - Loud, Beverly hand.

Renata - It was not scary at all.

Coby - It loud, go door.

Isa - It was blasting off and we all go outside.

Wren - I knew there wasn't a real fire but I thought a fire truck was going to come.

Michelle read us the book, At the End of the Day in library class.  The book was about the things that might happen at the end of the day. For example being tired, a visit to the doctor's, too dark to play outside, not wanting to go to bed. However, there are things that we like at the end of the day such as a puppy waiting for you, reading a book that you really like, hugs from your loved ones or a nice cookie.  Friends had lots to say about what they like about this book.  Soon it was time to pick and check out a book!

Josh introduced the Cardinals to bean bags in gym class. He then asked, "Does anyone know why it's called a bean bag?".  A few friends said, "Cause it has beans inside". Josh then challenged friends to try to balance the bean bags on their shoulders, heads or on their hands as they walk around the gym. Followed by friends sliding their bean bags across the floor to see how far they would go and throwing them up to see how high they could make them go.

Wednesday

Friends exploring sensory activities such as playing with play-dough, shaving cream and sand.

Art class with Johanna began with friends listening to the book, Harold's Purple Crayon. As the book was being read Johanna asked friends to predict what they think will happen on each page. Throughout the book friends also identify the different shapes in the book. Johanna then asked, "Who remembers what shape we made last class". A few friends remembered and said, "Spiral". We all worked together to make straight and zigzag lines with straws. Then friends get a chance to work together on a big piece of paper to draw the shape/shapes they want to make, to create their work!

Thursday

This morning some Cardinals were eager to help a teacher repot 3 classroom plants into bigger plant pots. These friends were curious and asked great questions to learn more such as "why they need to be moved to a bigger pot, how do plants grow, what do they eat, why they are different, why they need dirt and why some are big and some are smaller"!!  As we finished repotting each plant the plant waterer for this week did her job of giving each plant a drink of water!!

The Cardinals made movements with scarves while listening to the song Dinosaur Stomp in music class with Keisha. Then we practice our singing voices with the help of Hooty the Owl. After singing our hello song Jambo. Keisha did the sign for standing and the Cardinal did a great job remembering what to do! We sang the song Cinnamon Turn and made movements along with Keisha as she played her guitar. We bounced, marched, tipped toe, rolled arms and jumped all while matching the volume level and beat of Keisha's singing and her guitar. We worked with shaker eggs as we sang Washy Washy and finished up class with our goodbye song! Ask your Cardinal to show you the sign of standing as Keisha taught us.

It was raining and so the Cardinals found other ways to engage in large motor fun!! We took over the Extended day space downstairs in lower school and ran around, played duck duck goose and red light-green light, before going on an inside walk!

                                       A spider discovery!

Friends taking a walk from Lower school through Middle school and arriving in Upper school! We saw a few Middle schoolers that were once Cardinals!

In Upper school, we met another Isa and our Cardinal Isa was delighted! We also visited with Masai's dad Mikael!

Friday

Friends continued their work of learning numbers in Spanish with Alicia. Today we went over numbers 1-10 in Spanish, then Alicia in random order showed friends numbers 1-5. Friends then needed to figure out the numbers as Alicia showed it! Followed by friends two at a time playing a game of swatter. This time the swatters were really big!  Ask your Cardinal how did it feel working with the big swatters? Today it was Isa's turn to squeeze la vaca!

We saw Colby's dad Josh in the lower school and he came in and read us the book Giraffe Can't Dance!

Our Cardinals were very excited to see what their parents left for them in the classroom!!
